The Dr. Yen-Son Huang Courtyard in Taiwan honors the technologist’s legacy with interactive architecture, amphitheater seating, symbolic design, and innovation-focused public space.
Nestled in 光明里, Taiwan, the Dr. Yen-Son Huang Courtyard, designed by JC. Architecture & Design, is a visionary memorial dedicated to Dr. Yen-Son (Paul) Huang, a pioneer in Taiwan’s semiconductor and technology industries. Spanning 50 m² and unveiled in 2024, this courtyard goes beyond traditional monument design to become an interactive public space that embodies Dr. Huang's entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation.

Honoring a Taiwanese Technologist and Entrepreneur
Dr. Yen-Son Huang, a Tainan native and graduate of the second generation of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, was renowned as the developer of PiE Design Systems, NOVAS Software, and as the major founder of ECAD. He is also celebrated as the creator of the Dracula physical design verification system, leaving an indelible mark on Taiwan’s semiconductor landscape.
In gratitude for his lifelong devotion to education and innovation, Dr. Huang’s family generously donated 20 million NTD to establish the courtyard, reflecting his entrepreneurial legacy and fostering a space for future generations to learn, collaborate, and dream.

Redefining Monument Design
Breaking away from conventional monuments, often bronze sculptures on pedestals with plaques, the courtyard transforms commemoration into a functional architectural space. JC. Architecture & Design leveraged their expertise in public space design to create a structure that resonates with students, staff, and visitors, encouraging interaction and engagement rather than passive admiration.

Lifting the Wafer: A Symbol of Innovation
Central to the design is a stainless steel amphitheater shaped like a circle, Dr. Huang's favorite form: symbolizing perfection, continuity, and innovation. The form mirrors a silicon wafer, a nod to Dr. Huang’s groundbreaking contributions. Elevated above the ground, the steel platform evokes a “magic carpet”, inviting students to sit, reflect, and envision limitless possibilities.

An Outdoor Hub for Learning and Collaboration
The courtyard doubles as an open-air theater, where students and faculty can gather, brainstorm, and engage in social interaction. Inspired by Dr. Huang’s philosophy of success: study hard, work hard, and make good friends: the space encourages meaningful exchanges and fosters a culture of collaboration, mentorship, and discovery.

Innovative Materiality and Future-Focused Design
Collaborating with ROSO Robot Manufacturing Laboratory, JC. Architecture & Design employed 3D printing via robotic arms to craft the courtyard seating, producing a gradient blue design that symbolizes technology, innovation, and the future. The water-wave motif, smooth lines, and dripping arcs evoke a sense of fluidity, creativity, and high-tech sophistication, reflecting the ethos of the NYCU Department of Electrophysics.

A Lasting Legacy
The Dr. Yen-Son Huang Courtyard is more than a tribute: it is a living monument, bridging memory, innovation, and public engagement. By combining architectural ingenuity, interactive spaces, and symbolic design, the courtyard immortalizes Dr. Huang’s visionary contributions while inspiring future generations to pursue knowledge, collaboration, and technological advancement.
