The Espartal Pavilion is a temporary architectural installation in Alicante, Spain, conceived as a climate-responsive structure that redefines public space through material innovation and cultural memory. Designed collaboratively by GA estudio, Florencia Galecio, Juan Gubbins, and ELE Arkitektura, the pavilion transforms an ordinary transit square into a shaded civic environment for gathering, rest, and reflection.
Located in the heart of Alicante’s urban center, the intervention demonstrates how temporary architecture and sustainable materials can reshape public life while reinforcing Mediterranean identity.


Esparto as Contemporary Architectural Material
At the core of the pavilion’s design is esparto grass, a historic fiber deeply rooted in Mediterranean agricultural traditions and present on the Iberian Peninsula since Phoenician times. Traditionally used in rural crafts, esparto is reinterpreted here as a contemporary architectural material.
Suspended above the square, the woven esparto structure filters sunlight and casts a dense, textured shadow across the ground plane. This shading system creates thermal comfort, modifies the microclimate, and reduces heat accumulation, a critical strategy in warm Mediterranean cities like Alicante.
Through this material choice, the pavilion establishes a dialogue between nature and artifice, countryside and city, heritage and innovation.


Microclimate Design and Urban Comfort
The Espartal Pavilion exemplifies climate-adaptive urban design. By generating filtered light and airflow, the structure transforms a previously transitional urban area into a livable public space.
Rather than relying on mechanical systems, the installation uses passive environmental strategies to:
