Floating Garage House by FujiwaraMuro Architects
Compact urban house in Osaka featuring a floating cantilevered form, skylit interiors, garage integration, and multifunctional living spaces with natural light.
Located in a dense residential neighborhood of Osaka, the Garage House in Toyonaka by FujiwaraMuro Architects reimagines compact urban living on a flagpole-shaped lot. Surrounded by closely spaced homes and apartments, the project maximizes privacy, daylight, and functionality within its 67 m² footprint.

Responding to the client’s dual passions for cars and plants, the architects designed a sunlit upper floor with skylights and high side windows alongside a garage and parking area integrated into the narrow site approach. The structure’s slanted, cantilevered second-floor wall allows light and air to filter through, while offering a striking, floating visual effect.

Clad in gray siding and silver corrugated panels, the exterior emphasizes the home’s layered volumes and lightness. Inside, light-toned finishes enhance brightness, and subtle gray contrasts define spatial boundaries. The living-dining-kitchen (LDK) area features a continuous bench along the slanted wall — serving as seating, display, and storage — seamlessly connecting the sunroom, living space, and kitchen.
