Glen Ellen Residence by Nick Noyes Architecture
Glen Ellen Residence blends gabled wings, cedar-lined arcades, and vineyard views into a modern, sustainable California home rooted in landscape.
A Vineyard Home Rooted in Landscape and Tradition
Nestled within a 10-acre vineyard and scrub oak landscape in Glen Ellen, California, the Glen Ellen Residence by Nick Noyes Architecture embodies a perfect balance between modern design, rural tradition, and strong environmental integration. This single-family residence was conceived to blend into the rolling vineyard terrain while reimagining an existing structure’s footprint, retaining the original house’s foundations and roof as part of the new architectural composition.

Architectural Composition and Layout
The home is defined by three iconic metal-roofed gabled wings, designed in a manner that reflects the timeless vernacular architecture of Sonoma Valley’s agricultural buildings. These volumes are connected by an open cedar-lined arcade and a steel-and-cedar trellis, creating a series of transitional spaces that blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.
At the heart of the design is a courtyard, framed by the gabled wings and the trellis, that becomes the home’s central gathering space. A pool and carefully landscaped outdoor area complete the courtyard, while four high-canopied trees provide generous shade during the hot California summers. This layout not only fosters communal living but also establishes a strong dialogue between the architecture and the vineyard setting.

Interior Design and Material Palette
Inside, the residence features expansive living spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows, maximizing views of the surrounding vineyards and oak trees. The interiors are designed with a balance of warm natural materials and modern minimalism, creating a sense of openness while maintaining intimacy.
- Cedar ceilings and exposed structural beams add texture and rhythm to the living spaces.
- Steel and concrete elements reinforce the home’s modern identity while ensuring durability.
- Large sliding glass doors extend the living room and dining areas into the outdoor courtyard, creating seamless connections between indoor comfort and the natural environment.
This fusion of industrial and natural elements results in an aesthetic that is both contemporary and rooted in place.

Sustainability and Site Integration
The Glen Ellen Residence was designed with deep respect for its landscape. The home’s orientation and form are carefully aligned to optimize natural light, cross-ventilation, and seasonal shading, reducing reliance on mechanical systems.
The architecture makes use of local and durable materials—such as cedar, steel, and concrete—chosen for their longevity and low maintenance. This design approach highlights Nick Noyes Architecture’s philosophy of creating timeless, sustainable residential design deeply tied to its environment.

The Glen Ellen Residence exemplifies the power of architecture to merge heritage, landscape, and modern living. By retaining the footprint of the original home and reinterpreting it through contemporary design, Nick Noyes Architecture has created a residence that is both respectful of its past and innovative in its present.
This project stands as a celebration of California’s wine country architecture, where rustic charm meets modern sophistication in a home built for both family life and connection to the land.
