Langtou Gengxue + Education Centre by Atelier FCJZ
A contemporary education centre blending traditional village forms, red brick craftsmanship, and landscape views to teach, house, and connect the next generation.
Located in Langtou Ancient Village in Guangzhou, China, the Langtou Gengxue + Education Centre by Atelier FCJZ is a contemporary cultural and educational facility rooted in history, rural revitalization, and material heritage. Completed in 2024, the 4,039 m² centre forms a unified cultural cluster alongside the neighboring ChunYangTai Arts and Cultural Centre, positioning itself as a bridge between traditional village culture and the next generation.

Context: Rural Revitalization & Cultural Continuity
Set on a triangular plot adjacent to lotus ponds and historic lanes, the center responds directly to the spatial DNA of Langtou Village. Historically, schools in the village lined the edges of water bodies, integrating learning environments into agricultural landscapes. Atelier FCJZ revitalizes this typology by creating a new “street of academies”, a pedestrian spine that introduces young learners to agrarian culture while connecting the new buildings with the village’s heritage.
The project plays a critical role in the ongoing cultural tourism and rural renewal initiative, reactivating the village’s identity through architecture that blends tradition with innovation.

Architectural Composition: Three Volumes Along the Riverbank
To harmonize with the ancient built fabric, the architects adopt a strategy similar to ChunYangTai:
- Three small, rectangular buildings
- Sloping roofs, echoing traditional architecture
- Slight rotational alignment to follow the orientation of the southern riverbank

This dynamic positioning reduces the massing, enhances visual permeability, and creates a child-friendly scale appropriate for an educational environment.

Materiality: Red Brick, Grey Brick & Terracotta Research
Material research in Langtou Village reveals a gradual shift over decades—from traditional grey brick to widespread use of red brick. The Education Centre embraces this narrative:

Red Brick as the Primary Façade Material
The kiln-transformed terracotta bricks offer multiple tones created by temperature variations during firing, producing vibrant, non-uniform textures that energize the façades. Their subtle irregularities echo the craftsmanship of the village’s older dwellings.

Key material features include:
- Dry-hanging cladding system for precision and ventilation
- Varied brick bonds to differentiate interior functions
- Hollow bricks designed to accommodate steel reinforcement
The result is a façade that is expressive, tactile, and deeply connected to Langtou’s architectural memory.

Spatial Organization: Learning, Living & Community
The Langtou Gengxue + Education Centre integrates education, dormitory living, research, and social engagement across its three buildings.
Ground Floor: Public Programs
The first floor houses the primary community and educational activities:
- Lobby
- Classrooms & workshops
- Exhibition spaces
- Dining hall & kitchen
- Loggias and open corridors connecting all three buildings

The loggia, a central design gesture, provides shaded circulation and fosters interaction between students, teachers, and visitors.

Upper Floors: Dormitories & Multifunctional Hall
The second and third floors feature:
- Student dormitories arranged around a central atrium
- A double-height multifunctional hall, incorporating sports and events
- Interior balconies overlooking shared spaces
- Atrium-to-loggia visual continuity inspired by traditional village houses
The atrium acts as a social heart, bringing daylight into all levels and connecting living areas with the active ground floor.

Landscape Integration: Viewing Platforms & Countryside Access
One of the project's defining elements is its relationship with nature:
Five Rooftop Viewing Platforms
These terraces serve as:
- Outdoor classrooms
- Social gathering spaces
- Observation decks for the lotus ponds, fields, and ancient village

Cantilevered Second-Floor Terrace
This platform provides:
- Additional outdoor teaching space
- Deep eaves that protect circulation routes from sun and rain

Grand Staircase to the Countryside
A generous outdoor stair links Buildings A and B, descending toward an arch bridge leading directly to the surrounding agricultural fields. This experiential route immerses students in the landscape, reinforcing the project’s educational mission: reconnecting youth with local agricultural culture.

A Contemporary Academy Rooted in Local Heritage
Atelier FCJZ’s Langtou Gengxue + Education Centre succeeds as a contemporary reinterpretation of rural educational architecture. Through its modest scale, thoughtful material strategy, and integration of nature, the complex fosters an environment where learning, heritage, and community coexist. It stands as a model for culturally grounded rural revitalization in China.
