Little Mermaid-Inspired Villa for Sale
Own a piece of fairy tale magic with this enchanting property in Denmark
According to legend, Sestri Levante's peninsula was born from the illicit romance between Tigullio, a merman, and Segesta, a mermaid. It's believed that this enchanting tale may have influenced Danish writer Christian Andersen, who stayed in the area in 1833 and later wrote "The Little Mermaid".
On the cliff's edge, just 15km from Portofino and 25km from the Cinque Terre, sits a captivating villa designed by architect Luigi Carlo Daneri between 1938 and 1940. Daneri was inspired by the language of the renowned Le Corbusier. Now for sale, this charming abode is set amidst 2.3 hectares of parkland, ensuring complete seclusion and tranquillity from the demands of contemporary life.
Previously owned by an esteemed Italian publisher, this villa was frequented by industry giants in design, architecture, publishing, and business. An exceptional example of untouched rationalist architecture, the property has been recognised as a National Monument of Modern Architecture by the Italian Ministry of Culture, bearing a testament to Italy's 20th-century architectural heritage.
The structure was meticulously designed to harmonize with its environmental surroundings, finding the ideal balance between interior intimacy and the immensity of the landscape. Its efficient functionality, precise room layout, and cutting-edge technology embody what Giò Ponti envisioned as a "dwelling, not merely a place to stay, but a stage for human actions of living, thinking, working, and contemplating."
After its construction, the villa was featured in prestigious publications such as Casabella (October 1940) and Domus (January 1941), and later in the 1990s by Abitare.
A captivating path through the woods and a staircase lead to a private beach with exclusive sea access. The villa boasts a swimming pool, sun terrace, and ample parking, with 1,100 square metres of interior space spread across the main house and two independent annexes. Spanning three floors, it features nine bedrooms and six bathrooms, making it the perfect space for hosting numerous guests.
