Ordos Smart Sports Park: A Cutting-Edge Urban Recreation Hub in Ordos, China
Ordos Smart Sports Park is a sustainable, all-age recreational space in Ordos, China, blending nature, sports, and smart technology.
Ordos Smart Sports Park, located in Kangbashi District, Ordos, China, is a pioneering urban space designed to foster health and well-being through outdoor sports and leisure activities. This comprehensive sports park, spanning 197,000 square meters, opened in 2023 and was developed by the architectural firm PLAT ASIA. The park’s design embraces the area's unique geographical features, promoting a healthy lifestyle through innovative design solutions and cutting-edge technologies.

Site Overview and Renovation
Transforming an Underutilized Urban Square
The former "SHIJIE" urban square was located at the heart of Ordos City, surrounded by residential zones, office buildings, schools, and exhibition centers. Despite its prime location, the area had limited functionality, with insufficient sports amenities and an inefficient layout. The original square featured a few public facilities, including gate ball courts, but lacked the necessary infrastructure for active recreation. PLAT ASIA's renovation aimed to transform this space into a vibrant, people-friendly sports park that would support the community’s growing interest in outdoor activities and healthy living.

Design Concept and Inspiration
Connecting Nature and Urban Life
The design of Ordos Smart Sports Park draws inspiration from the unique landscape of Ordos, which blends desert, steppe, and riverine features. The park’s layout reflects the natural topography of the region, including the flowing curves of the Honliu and Yellow Rivers. The northwest-to-southeast slope of the dunes in the Kubuqi Desert and Mu Us Desert also influenced the design's micro-terrain, creating an immersive environment that merges the natural world with urban life.

Key Features of Ordos Smart Sports Park

- Comprehensive Sports Areas: Located in the northwest, this area includes football pitches, basketball courts, tennis courts, badminton courts, and table-tennis courts, making it suitable for both professional and leisure activities.
- Kids' Playground: Situated at the heart of the park, this area features interactive play equipment and safe spaces for children to explore.
- Teenager Bike Field: A dedicated area for teenagers to engage in cycling activities.
- Elderly Fitness Area: Designed to encourage physical activity for seniors, this space offers specialized exercise equipment for older adults.
- Gate Ball Stadium: Upgraded from the original courts, this stadium is now capable of hosting professional games.
- Seasonal Recreation Zones: The park features an alkaline soil area that transforms into a sandpit in summer and skating tracks in winter.
- Water Features: A new water pool and gesture-based fountains add dynamic elements to the park’s landscape, enhancing the overall user experience.

A Wonderland for Kids
The park's center features a new building that integrates a children's playground and a park management service center. The building is equipped with a rooftop lookout that provides a panoramic view of the entire park and the surrounding city. The first floor houses an office, sports store, café, and restroom facilities. The semi-open corridors and shaded facades encourage interaction among visitors while providing a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for families.

Dune Ridge Design and Natural Elements
Inspired by the region's woodland pasture character, the park’s landscape design emphasizes open spaces for leisure activities such as camping. Tall arborescent trees, including native species like Populous alba, Pinus sylvestris, and Salix matsudana, have been preserved and integrated into the design. These trees provide shade and create a sense of safety and connection with nature. Additionally, membrane structure pavilions with curved ridge lines offer shelter and rest areas, reflecting the dynamic form of the surrounding dunes.

Smart and Sustainable Design Features
Integrating Technology for Enhanced Visitor Experience
Ordos Smart Sports Park incorporates advanced smart technologies to enhance visitor experiences and ensure sustainable park management. Key features include:
- Smart Lighting and Traffic Monitoring: Automated lighting systems and real-time traffic data monitoring ensure efficient energy use and park circulation.
- Solar-Powered Charging Stations: Outdoor furniture is equipped with solar energy-based charging stations to promote sustainability.
- Water Management Systems: A state-of-the-art water purifier system and eco-friendly materials help maintain the park’s water balance, creating a harmonious environment for both people and nature.
- Smart Navigation System: The park uses an intuitive navigation system, making it easy for visitors to explore the various recreational zones.
Sustainability and Environmental Consciousness
The park’s design prioritizes sustainability by incorporating water circulation systems and green materials throughout the site. The natural terrain is preserved, with careful attention to water flow and the introduction of materials that enhance ecological balance.
