Education is undergoing a major transformation. Traditional classrooms, rigid learning systems, and one-directional teaching methods are gradually becoming outdated in a world shaped by collaboration, creativity, and technology. In response to these changing educational needs, Re-Imagine proposes a bold vision for future school architecture by eliminating the conventional classroom entirely.

Designed by Elaheh Teimouri and Shahrzad Soltanieh, Re-Imagine was a shortlisted entry in the School Of Thought 2020 competition. The project rethinks the idea of a school as an active learning hub where exploration, interaction, and hands-on experience become the foundation of education.

Rather than organizing students into isolated classrooms, the project creates a dynamic environment where learning happens through movement, experimentation, collaboration, and discovery. The architecture itself becomes an educational tool, encouraging communication and shared experiences across multiple interconnected spaces.

A School Without Classrooms

At the core of the project lies a radical but increasingly relevant idea: a school without classrooms. Instead of static educational spaces, Re-Imagine introduces a flexible learning ecosystem where students engage with practical knowledge and creative exploration.

The proposal challenges the traditional model of education based on a single-point information source. Rather than positioning teachers as the only source of knowledge, the project encourages peer learning, collaborative workshops, and experiential education.

This new educational framework creates an environment where students learn through interaction and participation. Spaces are designed to support different forms of intelligence, creativity, and professional interests, allowing students to develop practical skills while exploring their own learning paths.

The architecture reflects this philosophy by replacing enclosed classrooms with adaptable communal spaces, workshops, open gathering zones, fabrication labs, theatres, art studios, and collaborative learning areas.

Future School Design Focused on Collaboration

The project positions collaboration as the central element of future school architecture. The entire spatial organization is carefully designed to encourage interaction between students, educators, and creative disciplines.

A large central glass box becomes the visual and functional nucleus of the building. This transparent volume accommodates the main workshops and maker spaces, creating continuous visual connections between multiple levels.

The stepped floor configuration enhances openness and visibility throughout the school. By setting back the floors from Level 1 to Level 3, the design promotes communication and teamwork between users occupying different spaces.

The architecture avoids separation and hierarchy. Instead, it establishes a network of connected environments where learning becomes a collective activity.

The building’s circulation system also plays a major role in encouraging collaboration. Large interior staircases, exterior ramps, and open seating areas create informal social zones where students can gather, exchange ideas, and participate in spontaneous discussions.

Experiential Learning Through Architecture

One of the strongest aspects of Re-Imagine is its emphasis on experiential learning architecture. The project understands that educational environments influence how students think, interact, and grow.

The design incorporates a wide variety of specialized programs that move beyond conventional academic spaces. These include:

  • Digital fabrication labs
  • Robotics laboratories
  • 3D printing workshops
  • Art and painting studios
  • Sculpture workshops
  • Wood workshops
  • Theatre and performance spaces
  • Collaborative learning zones
  • Informal gathering spaces
  • Recreation facilities

These environments allow students to learn through making, experimenting, and participating. The school becomes a platform for creative production rather than passive information consumption.

The architecture also supports movement as part of the educational process. Interior and exterior staircases connect the building vertically and horizontally, encouraging circulation and interaction between different levels.

This continuous movement creates an active learning atmosphere where education extends beyond dedicated teaching areas.

Flexible Learning Spaces for Modern Education

Flexibility is a defining feature of the project. Unlike conventional schools where rooms are assigned fixed purposes, Re-Imagine introduces adaptable and multifunctional environments.

The learning spaces can accommodate various educational activities depending on changing needs. Students can choose different environments based on their preferred learning styles, encouraging individuality and self-directed education.

Large collaborative seating areas, open gathering spaces, and flexible workshops create opportunities for both independent and group-based learning.

The project also recognizes that future education requires emotional and social engagement. By creating open, welcoming, and visually connected spaces, the architecture promotes inclusivity, creativity, and social interaction.

The flexibility of the building allows it to evolve over time alongside educational methods and technological advancements.

Integrating Architecture With Landscape

The relationship between interior and exterior spaces plays an important role in the project’s design strategy.

The building is elevated to activate the base and create public engagement at ground level. Exterior seating areas and circulation pathways blend the architecture with the surrounding landscape.

A series of ramp staircases connect the basement courtyard to the upper levels and exterior event spaces. These transitions strengthen the connection between indoor learning environments and outdoor social activities.

The exterior event space overlooks workshops and maker spaces through glass enclosures, visually extending the educational environment into the landscape.

The design also incorporates recreational and sports facilities such as football fields, basketball courts, climbing walls, and open courtyards, reinforcing the idea that education extends beyond traditional academic instruction.

The Architecture of Visibility and Openness

Transparency is both a spatial and conceptual theme throughout the project. Large glazed surfaces, open sectional relationships, and interconnected levels create a sense of openness across the building.

The central glass box acts as a visual anchor that exposes the learning process itself. Students can observe activities happening across different disciplines, encouraging curiosity and interdisciplinary interaction.

This transparency transforms education into a shared experience rather than a hidden or isolated process.

Natural light further enhances the atmosphere of the school. Large glazed openings bring daylight deep into the interiors, creating bright and welcoming communal spaces.

The combination of openness, visibility, and movement creates an energetic educational environment aligned with contemporary pedagogical approaches.

Re-Imagining Educational Architecture for the Future

Re-Imagine demonstrates how architecture can actively shape educational experiences. The project challenges conventional ideas about schools by replacing classrooms with collaborative ecosystems focused on creativity, experimentation, and hands-on learning.

The proposal recognizes that future students require environments that support adaptability, innovation, and communication. Rather than designing static institutional spaces, the project creates a flexible educational landscape that evolves with its users.

Through transparent spatial organization, collaborative learning environments, fabrication workshops, and experiential design strategies, Re-Imagine proposes a new model for future school architecture.

The project ultimately asks an important question: what if schools were designed not around instruction, but around discovery?
