The Triangle Residence: Minimalist Geometric Home by Kith Studio in Sri Lanka
The Triangle Residence by Kith Studio is a modern, triangular home in Sri Lanka, featuring open-plan spaces, a central courtyard, and a spiral staircase.
Located in Horana, Sri Lanka, The Triangle Residence, designed by Kith Studio, is a contemporary family home that marries minimalist design with site-specific innovation. Completed in 2023, this 276 m² residence is thoughtfully crafted on a challenging triangular, sloping plot of 12 perches (303 sq.m.), transforming geometric constraints into opportunities for creative architectural expression. The project was led by architect Pasindu Kithmina, with photography by Thadshan Yogesh and Pasindu Kithmina, and key material contributions from Alumex and Rocell.

Innovative Design for a Triangular Site
The home’s unique triangular layout responds elegantly to the sloping terrain, incorporating a central courtyard and a connecting bridge to align floor levels. This design strategy creates a seamless relationship between indoors and outdoors, harmonizing the structure with its natural environment. A striking double-height volume anchors the central living spaces, highlighted by a grand spiral staircase that acts as both a functional circulation element and a sculptural centerpiece.

Spatial Planning and Functionality
The Triangle Residence accommodates a master suite, two additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, a family lounge, living-dining areas, a kitchen, and a garage. The master suite serves as a private retreat, complete with a serene garden space designed for relaxation and privacy. Open-plan layouts dominate the common areas, allowing for flexible space utilization and a sense of continuity. Natural light and ventilation are maximized through strategically placed windows, folding doors, and a central courtyard, fostering a bright and airy atmosphere throughout the home.

Materials and Aesthetic Detailing
A neutral color palette defines the home’s visual character, enhancing the geometry of its spaces without overwhelming individual elements. Key materials include raw exposed concrete, cement-finished floor tiles, natural stone tiles, Teak timber, and white-painted brick walls. The raw slab soffits introduce texture and warmth, while a cement grill wall complements the double-height volume. The reinforced concrete spiral staircase functions as a structural, functional, and aesthetic element, reinforcing the home’s modernist sensibilities.

Architectural Highlights
One of the most distinctive features is the bridge connecting the master suite to the rest of the residence. This bridge not only provides a practical connection but also elevates the visual drama of the central courtyard. An existing tree, preserved within the design, integrates seamlessly into the bridge, creating a sense of continuity with the landscape and emphasizing biophilic design principles. Timber pivoted windows and aluminum-glazed folding windows ensure abundant natural light, ventilation, and energy efficiency throughout the home.

A Contemporary Home in Harmony with Nature
The Triangle Residence exemplifies contemporary Sri Lankan residential architecture, combining geometric precision, material authenticity, and environmental responsiveness. The interplay between open-plan spaces, sculptural elements, and natural surroundings creates a home that is at once functional, elegant, and deeply connected to its site. The thoughtful integration of the sloping plot, central courtyard, and preserved natural elements highlights Kith Studio’s commitment to context-driven, sustainable architecture.
