Tree House by the Lake by H2 Architects: A Sustainable Retreat Nestled in Vietnam’s Forest Canopy
A nostalgic treehouse retreat blending recycled materials, natural cooling, and elevated design—crafted for childhood joy and sustainable living.
Blending nostalgia, nature, and sustainability, Tree House by the Lake by H2 Architects is a 120-square-meter forest retreat designed to evoke childhood memories while fostering a deep connection with the environment. Located in the tranquil Vietnamese countryside, this elevated timber structure is more than a house—it is a heartfelt tribute to nature, heritage, and the magic of growing up among trees.

A Childhood Memory Turned Architectural Vision
The project began with a story. An elderly man shared his fond memories of building makeshift huts with friends under the shade of large trees during hot summer days. These huts were their world—a place for storytelling, games, and joy. His wish was simple: to gift his grandchildren a similar magical experience surrounded by nature.

Architecture in Harmony with the Landscape
True to its name, Tree House by the Lake is nestled within a centuries-old conch tree forest and elevated above ground, gently cradled by nature. The structure captures breezes from the nearby lake and basks in the soft shade of the forest canopy, naturally regulating temperature and eliminating the need for artificial cooling.
Unlike conventional concrete dwellings, this home was built using reclaimed and recycled “scrap” materials sourced from nearby demolitions—corrugated iron, aged wood, and steel components. These materials, rich with history, give the home a rustic charm while aligning with the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle.

A Minimal Footprint, A Maximum Experience
The design emphasizes minimal environmental impact. Open-plan interiors encourage ventilation and light, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping forest and lake views. The elevated build reduces disruption to the forest floor and can be dismantled and relocated without harming the landscape. It’s an architecture of transience and adaptability.
The structure seamlessly balances function and emotion. While it features essential comforts like privacy, flexibility, and comfort, it prioritizes connection—between people, and between humans and nature. Children can run, climb, crawl, and dream freely within this safe, stimulating environment, rediscovering curiosity and joy.

Sustainability Through Storytelling
Tree House by the Lake is not just a house—it’s a manifesto for sustainable architecture. It proves that thoughtful design can enrich life while protecting the planet. It teaches the next generation that nature is not just a backdrop but a teacher and a partner. The project is also a call to embrace the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—for a better, greener future.
As the home breathes with the forest and lives among the trees, it inspires a new era of eco-conscious, context-sensitive architecture in Vietnam and beyond.
