Revitalizing Khulna Old Railway Station Through Acclimatization of Memories
Old buildings, like storytellers of a city’s past, embody the magic of its unique character. Yet, many of these treasures are fading into neglect, losing the stories they once carried. Khulna, the third-largest city in Bangladesh, faces this challenge acutely—its rich cultural heritage is deteriorating while public spaces remain scarce. The result is a gradual erosion of identity and a lack of shared spaces where people can connect and celebrate community life.
The Khulna Old Railway Station, built in 1884 during the British era, stands as a vital historical landmark. Once a bustling lifeline, it now sits weathered and overlooked. Restoring this station offers a unique opportunity: not only to preserve a key piece of history but also to revitalize it as a dynamic public space. Adaptive reuse of its five old buildings, based on their historical value, can transform the station into a vibrant cultural hub.
The proposed design seeks to restore the physical infrastructure in harmony with the station’s original layout while accommodating contemporary needs. New functions include a library café, railway archives, an open-air gallery, a nostalgic cinema, and guest houses. A central plaza will link these facilities to the nearby riverfront, while repurposed rail wagons will serve as local-run shops. The plan emphasizes accessibility, safety, and community engagement, ensuring the project benefits residents as well as visitors.
Minimalist design strategies, using metal structures and contemporary materials, will respect the station’s heritage while introducing modern functionality. Managed by the railway authority with strong community support, the station will become more than a relic—it will be a living space.
Once restored, Khulna’s Old Railway Station will celebrate the city’s heritage while fostering social bonds, offering a vibrant stage where locals and tourists can gather, share stories, and create new memories.
