Zaremba Residence by Reitsma and Associates: A Sculptural Coastal Masterpiece in Buddina, Australia
Zaremba Residence is a sculptural coastal home blending curves, natural light, privacy, and timeless materials for modern family living.
An Iconic Coastal Design
The house sits at the intersection of the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Mooloolaba Marina to the northwest, a dramatic site that inspired a curvilinear architectural language. The client’s vision was to create a home that would become a local icon. In response, the architects conceived a design characterized by identifying curves and striking forms, creating a façade that is both commanding and fluid.
From street level, the sculpted elevation blends vertical and horizontal curves using stepped balconies and elegantly detailed white blade handrails. These architectural gestures, along with solid rendered walls in soft whites and greys, give the residence a powerful visual identity that’s both timeless and site-specific.

Smart Design for Challenging Constraints
Despite the beauty of the location, the site presented challenges, including a small cul-de-sac with minimal street parking—an issue for a family with six vehicles. Reitsma and Associates addressed this by integrating a generous basement garage for parking and storage, seamlessly hidden from view.
Another challenge was ensuring privacy while still capturing natural light. The southern façade, facing the street, was designed to be solid and protective, while the home opens toward the northern aspect, flooding the interiors with sunlight through large windows and a dramatic double-height void.

Light-Filled Interiors and Rooftop Views
Internally, the Zaremba Residence balances open, sunlit volumes with cozy, livable spaces tailored to the family’s needs. A central double-height void above the living room acts as a vertical light shaft, creating a sense of spaciousness and vertical movement. The bespoke staircase, visually lightweight and gracefully curved, connects the three levels in harmony with the architectural language of the home.
A discreet, almost hidden rooftop door provides access to a panoramic rooftop terrace, where residents can enjoy unobstructed sunsets over the Mooloolaba Spit—one of the home’s most cherished features.

Timeless Materials and Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow
The material palette was chosen for its elegance and longevity—natural whites, soft greys, Scandinavian-inspired timbers, and custom handrails unify the interior and exterior experiences. The vertical white blades blur the boundary between inside and outside, contributing to the house’s seamless flow and sculptural rhythm.
The Zaremba Residence is more than just a home—it is a testament to thoughtful coastal architecture, where the bold meets the livable. It reflects the lifestyle and aspirations of the family, while also becoming a landmark in its neighborhood. Every design element—from its curvaceous façade to its rooftop sanctuary—demonstrates architectural precision, contextual sensitivity, and emotional resonance.
