Sahara Communitas: A Vision in Sustainable Architecture Design
A global hub for cultural unity and sustainable celebrations, blending ecology and architecture for an unforgettable festival experience.
The Sahara Communitas project, designed by Jinming Li, stands as a beacon of innovation in sustainable architecture design. This shortlisted entry for the EHC Sahara competition seamlessly blends ecological considerations with cultural inclusivity, offering a unique venue for festivals from around the world.

Site Analysis
Positioned in an oasis, a natural thermodynamical system, Sahara Communitas leverages the self-organizing capability of its environment. By understanding the optimal site factors, the design ensures a harmonious integration of ecological architecture with local conditions. The site’s geographical coordinates, 21°11’01.10" N, 11°53’45.47" W, highlight its strategic location.

Ecological Prototype
The ecological approach emphasizes the relationship between natural and built environments. The project uses local environmental data to enhance efficiency and sustainability, ensuring the structure respects the desert's unique ecosystem.

Concept: A Platform for Global Unity
Sahara Communitas redefines the festival experience by uniting diverse traditions in a single venue. Drawing inspiration from Victor Turner's "The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure," the design emphasizes the transition between societal norms and liminality. It creates a persistent communitas where rituals and celebrations can occur 24/7, fostering global cultural exchange.

Generation and Typology
Using data from tools like Google Calendar, the project identifies patterns of global festivals and incorporates them into its design. Venues are interconnected to synchronize festivals across different times and spaces, creating a dynamic and inclusive environment.
- Venue Clustering: Utilizes particle simulations to strategically position festival venues.
- Tree Belt: Implements ecological strategies to maintain a sustainable oasis microclimate.
- Architecture: Features modular and flexible units that encourage community engagement.
- Infrastructure: Promotes cultural diversity by embedding multicultural streets and courtyards.
- Terrain: Leverages local geographical features to support a self-sustaining environment.

Programmatic Flexibility
The design incorporates multi-functional buildings to cater to various festival requirements. By aligning programmatic needs with the festival’s cultural context, the site supports live, work, and play activities seamlessly.
Climatic Strategy
The project employs advanced thermodynamic principles to achieve a balance between environmental comfort and energy efficiency. The integration of psychrometric charts aids in optimizing local climate conditions for the venue's operations.

Main Building Construction
The architecture of the main building integrates modular blocks (Block 1 through Block 4) to adapt to various functional needs. The design exemplifies a commitment to innovative construction techniques while maintaining aesthetic integrity.
Sahara Communitas by Jinming Li exemplifies the future of sustainable architecture design. By creating a venue that celebrates global unity through festivals, it sets a precedent for integrating cultural richness with ecological mindfulness. This project is a testament to the transformative power of architecture in bridging communities and preserving our planet.
